What is Behentrimonium Chloride?
Behentrimonium chloride, sometimes abbreviated as BTAC-22, is a quaternary ammonium salt, which means it carries a positive electrical charge. It is derived from rapeseed oil, making it a plant-based ingredient rather than a purely synthetic one. You will sometimes see it listed on an ingredient label as "docosyltrimethylammonium chloride," which is just its formal chemical name.
The "22" in BTAC-22 refers to the length of its carbon chain: 22 carbon atoms. That long chain is exactly what makes it useful in a conditioner. It is attracted to the surface of hair, where it deposits a thin, evenly spread layer that reduces friction between strands.
Behentrimonium chloride belongs to a broader family of conditioning agents called cationic surfactants. "Cationic" simply means positively charged. Hair carries a natural negative charge, especially when it is damaged or dry. Opposites attract, so cationic ingredients bond readily to the hair surface without you needing to do anything special. When you rinse, most of the surfactant goes down the drain, but a thin conditioning film stays on each strand.

The safety profile of behentrimonium chloride is well documented. Here is what the key assessments found.
The CIR Expert Panel Review (2012)
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review is an independent body that evaluates cosmetic ingredient safety. In 2012, the CIR Expert Panel reviewed behentrimonium chloride alongside a family of related quaternary ammonium compounds. The panel concluded that behentrimonium chloride is safe for use in rinse-off hair care products at concentrations up to 3.0%. The panel noted that at these use levels, the ingredient does not penetrate the skin in significant amounts and does not present a meaningful risk of systemic exposure.
EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009
The European Union takes one of the most precautionary regulatory stances on cosmetic ingredients anywhere in the world. Behentrimonium chloride is listed in Annex V of EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009, which is the list of permitted preservatives and conditionally permitted substances. The regulation sets the maximum allowed concentration at 3% in rinse-off products. The fact that it is permitted rather than restricted or banned reflects the regulator's confidence in its safety at these concentrations.
Skin and scalp tolerance
Multiple patch test studies have confirmed that behentrimonium chloride at concentrations used in commercial conditioners (typically 0.5% to 2%) shows low irritation potential in the general population. A study by Becker et al. (2009), published in the journal Contact Dermatitis, assessed the sensitisation potential of quaternary ammonium compounds and found that long-chain variants like behentrimonium chloride had a significantly lower sensitisation rate than shorter-chain equivalents. The longer carbon chain reduces the compound's ability to penetrate skin, which is a key safety advantage.
What about aquatic toxicity?
We are transparent about the full picture. Quaternary ammonium compounds as a class do show some aquatic toxicity at high concentrations in lab settings. However, the concentrations found in wastewater from consumer rinse-off products are far below levels shown to cause environmental harm in reviewed literature. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) continues to monitor this ingredient class, and we follow those assessments as they develop.
Why It Matters for Your Hair
Understanding safety is one part of the conversation. Understanding what the ingredient actually does for your hair is the other.
It reduces friction and breakage. The thin cationic film behentrimonium chloride deposits on each hair strand acts like a lubricant between fibres. This means your comb moves through wet hair more easily, which directly reduces the mechanical damage that causes split ends and breakage over time.
It smooths the cuticle. Hair is covered in tiny overlapping scales called the cuticle. When these scales lift, hair looks dull and feels rough. Behentrimonium chloride helps press those scales flat, which is why conditioned hair has more shine and a smoother texture.
It provides antistatic protection. Because it deposits a positively charged layer on hair, it neutralises the static charge that builds up during brushing or in dry weather. This reduces frizz and flyaways without weighing hair down.
It works efficiently in rinse-off formulas. One reason we chose behentrimonium chloride over heavier conditioning alternatives is its rinse-off efficiency. It delivers conditioning benefits without the residue buildup that can make hair feel heavy or greasy with repeated use.
It is compatible with other actives. Behentrimonium chloride works well alongside other ingredients we use, including natural oils, panthenol (a form of vitamin B5), and hydrolysed proteins. It does not destabilise these ingredients or reduce their effectiveness.

We chose behentrimonium chloride deliberately, not by default.
When the founder developed our first conditioner, the brief was straightforward: find ingredients that are proven to work, have a clear safety record, and can be explained honestly to anyone who reads the label. Behentrimonium chloride met all three criteria.
We use it at a concentration of 1.0% in our rinse-off conditioners, well within the EU-permitted maximum of 3%. At this level, it delivers the detangling and smoothing benefits our customers depend on, without any unnecessary excess.
We are aware that some ingredient databases rate quaternary ammonium compounds with a moderate "concern" score based on the broader chemical class rather than on behentrimonium chloride's specific data. We think those blanket class ratings are not always useful. They do not reflect the significant differences in toxicology between short-chain and long-chain quaternary ammonium compounds, nor do they account for the fact that rinse-off use at low concentrations is fundamentally different from leave-on or occupational exposure scenarios.
Our position is that ingredient transparency means reading the actual science, not outsourcing your opinion to a single database score. We will always share our concentration levels, the regulatory basis for our choices, and the studies behind them. That is what radical transparency looks like in practice.

Is behentrimonium chloride safe for a sensitive scalp?
For most people with a sensitive scalp, behentrimonium chloride in a rinse-off conditioner at concentrations below 3% is well tolerated. Because it is a rinse-off ingredient, contact time with the scalp is short. If you have a known allergy to quaternary ammonium compounds, check with a dermatologist before use.
Is behentrimonium chloride natural or synthetic?
It is semi-synthetic. The fatty acid chain is derived from rapeseed oil, a plant source, but the full molecule is produced through a chemical process. We believe "natural" and "effective" are not the same thing, and we prioritise formulating with ingredients that have a strong evidence base.
Does behentrimonium chloride build up on hair over time?
At the concentrations used in rinse-off conditioners, significant buildup is unlikely with regular shampooing. Behentrimonium chloride is designed to rinse clean. If you use very heavy conditioning products frequently and notice your hair feeling weighed down, a clarifying shampoo will remove any residue.
Why is behentrimonium chloride listed in Annex V of the EU Cosmetics Regulation?
Annex V covers preservatives and certain other conditionally permitted substances that regulators want to monitor with defined concentration limits. Being listed in Annex V is not a warning sign. It means the ingredient has been reviewed and is approved for use under specific, clearly defined conditions. The limit for behentrimonium chloride in rinse-off products is 3%.
Can behentrimonium chloride cause hair loss?
There is no clinical evidence linking behentrimonium chloride used in rinse-off conditioners at permitted concentrations to hair loss. Hair loss is typically related to genetics, hormonal factors, nutritional deficiencies, or scalp conditions, not conditioner ingredients at standard use levels.
